Raylee was always a bright kid with a zest for life. Smart, funny, curious, energetic and happy do not began to describe him. He loved learning about new things as long as they interested him.
When Raylee was about nine years old, they were learning about weather in his class as school. Since we lived in an area that was renown for tornadoes, the teacher had spent some time going over what caused tornadoes and how to react and respond in case of an emergency. In an effort to make third grade students understand the concept of tornadoes, the teacher explained that they were caused when cold air and warm air meet.
A few days after Raylee had learned about tornadoes, he was out riding his bike. I was looking out of the window and noticed Raylee pedaling as quickly as he could up the drive way. I went out to the porch thinking that he had something to show me or that he needed help.
“Momma, we have to go to the bathroom. There’s a tornado coming ’cause I just felt cold air and warm air at the same time!”
A moment I hope I always remember. Moments that shape and define us as individuals.
I really enjoyed this article, because it brings out the childhood of everyone’s life. As little kids we always take things so literal and this leads to great laughs in the future. I remember learning about tornadoes and also being scared of just seeing a dark cloud and even if the wind was picking up. My teacher told us that was the reason tornadoes started. The final part of the story, where Raylee was riding back was my favorite party of the story and how he told his mom that they had ti go hide in the bathroom. The only thing I wish about this story was if it had more description and if overall if it was longer. However, I did enjoy the story and also lead me to reminisce on my childhood!
As the rest of your short stories do, this one makes me remember taking things so seriously as a kid and how everyone seemed to laugh at me when i did so. Very confused on what to think when people would tell me things i would just keep my mouth shut eventually and hope i was right when i assumed the where being literal! This was a great write and i hope to read more like it.
Matthew,
Thank you.
