Weeks four, five, six, and maybe a few more have passed. We finally got the potato trash cans totally full of dirt and waited, somewhat impatiently, for the potatoes to start peeping through. There have been many times I’ve gone out there and stuck my arm into the dirt to see if I could feel any potatoes. No such luck. The tops have all come up and we are waiting on them to die off. According to the Internet, the plants have to die before the potatoes are ready.
In the meantime, our garden is looking great and I’ve already had some produce out of it. I have huge green tomatoes and I can’t wait until they are ready to eat! The corn is making, beans are sprouting, cucumbers are growing, fruit is ripening, and peppers are coming along nicely.
I’ve already picked several cucumbers. Some of them I’ve eaten but the others I’ve made cheating pickles with. I bet you’re wondering what a cheating pickle is, huh? I’ve been saving the pickle juice from my favorite pickles. Klaussen’s dills, bread-n-butter, hamburger pickles, etc. Yesterday I cut up all the cucumbers I had and put them in the various pickle jars. I have to admit that I tried some of them today….oh my, good and so much less work than trying to make pickles; which I’ve done in the past without good results…..
Here are some pictures of our garden and our first bit of produce. Enjoy!
I can truly honestly say that this is my favorite piece only because im a small town country girl. I love gardens. Planting in the summer or even the spring times just really makes me happy. I love the smell of the fresh dirt and to also play in the dirt. Every year around the summer, I plant a small garden with collard greens, tomatoes, green peppers, onion and sometimes peas. I love to watch the tomatoes grow until they are perfectly green. I pluck them off the small branches, take them inside the house to cut them into slices and make fried green tomatoes.
Reading this makes me want to try my hand at gardening. I think you should change the title to “What Mother Nature Has In-store.” It was nice being able to see good visuals of the produce you grown. I think i will try to plants some sweet potato’s and maybe some snap pea’s this spring. Are you still doing some farming if so do a update?
